How thick is the granite in your countertops?
We have granite slabs in 2 cm (about ¾”) and we build up a laminated edge to 4 cm (about 1 ½”). We also offer 3 cm (about 1 ¼”) which does not need to be laminated. With the 3 cm thick granite you do not need to use a plywood substrate underneath for support. Either thickness is more than adequate for strength in a kitchen countertop application.

What type of edges can I get on a granite countertop?
Murphy Granite Outlet offers 5 standard edges on granite:

  • Ogee – small and large
  • Bullnose – full and half
  • Beveled edge – ¼”, ½”, ¾”
  • Chiseled edge
  • Rolled edge – eased and polished
  • How much overhang is there on the finished edges?
We typically leave an overhang of about 2 inches for kitchen and bath countertops.

Do you have sinks available for granite countertops?
We recommend using an undermount sink that blends almost seamlessly into the granite countertop. We also have regular sinks available.

How much of an overhang can I have for a bar top or an island?
Granite overhangs can be up to 10” unsupported on 3 cm (approx. 1 ¼”) material. On 2 cm (approx. ¾”) stone you can have unsupported overhangs up to 6”. The alternative is to install corbels to provide additional support.

What colors of granite countertops do you offer?
Murphy Granite Outlet carries a wide range of granite colors, with every slab a unique blend of hues, veining and character. If you don’t see exactly what you want we can order over 300 colors!

Can I get an estimate on granite countertops?
Sure. If you stop by our Murphy, North Carolina store or fax us a sketch of your countertop layout and include dimensions we’ll be happy to give you a free estimate. When we do the job we will come out and make exact measurements for the template so your measurements don’t have to be precise. Please remember that you will only pay for the exact amount of granite that we use – to the square inch. There are no hidden charges or fees.

    What is a template?
A template is a pattern we make of your counter space that we use to cut the granite countertops precisely.

How long will it take to fabricate and install my granite countertops? What kind of lead times do you have?
Once we have your template we can be installing your new granite countertops in 5-7 days. Installation itself only takes a few hours.

    What are your business hours?
Murphy Granite Outlet is open Monday-Friday from 9:00-5:00 and Saturdays from 9:00-1:00. We are closed Sunday.

Do I have to buy the entire slab of granite?
No. Murphy Granite Outlet only charges you for the actual granite used on your countertops, measured to the square inch. There are no hidden costs and you only pay for what you use.

Do you provide granite for commercial work and custom builders?
Murphy Granite Outlet fabricates granite projects for residential customers, commercial establishments, and custom builders. Contact us if you have any questions about custom projects.

Do you do work other than countertops?
Yes, Murphy Granite Outlet does granite fireplace surrounds, wet bars, backsplashes, and outdoor kitchens. We also do complete kitchen and bath renovations including hardwood flooring, tile work, cabinets and all sub-contracted trades as necessary.

Is it possible for me to cut granite? What kind of special tools will I need?
Granite can be cut with a regular circular saw outfitted with a continuous diamond cutting blade. You can buy these blades from any building supply store such as Home Depot or Lowes for about $40.

Do I need to add support under the granite countertop?
You should install a ¾” thick plywood substrate to support the load and it’s a good idea to add a moisture barrier between the plywood and granite to reduce the chance of mold or mildew forming.

How do I keep the edges of the granite from chipping when I cut it?
The granite is probably chipping because of the slight vibration or wobble of the cutting blade. You need to reduce this vibration by installing collars along both sides of the blade. They look like large washers and they support the thin cutting blade and keep it from vibrating. Check at a tool store or building supply like Lowes or Home Depot or any large hardware store.

I have a joint in my counter where two slabs join. How can I pull the granite pieces together to reduce the joint size and make the seam invisible?
First of all, be certain you use a sharp blade when cutting and see the tip above for eliminating chipping. Secondly, you can wedge the two sections together to force it tighter. It’s also possible to buy a suction cup and turnbuckle device that you attach to both sides of the joint and pull it together.

How heavy is granite? What is the weight per square foot of granite?
Granite slabs come in different thicknesses. A typical weight per square foot is as below:

  • ¾” (2 cm) thick slab: 12.8 lbs / sq. ft.
  • 1 ¼” (3 cm) thick slab: 18 lbs / sq. ft.
  • It is very difficult to move large slabs of granite (we use forklifts for full slabs) and even when granite is cut to countertop size it is extremely heavy. It is very important to support the stone properly when transporting and installing so as not to stress the cut-out areas.

Does granite have to be sealed?
Although very dense and extremely hard, granite is still porous and can stain if a spill is not cleaned up quickly. We recommend that you seal your granite countertop using a natural stone sealer once every couple of years. A good way to check is to sprinkle some water on your granite. If it doesn’t bead up but soaks into the stone it needs to be re-sealed.

How do I clean my granite countertop?
The easiest way is to simply use warm water and mild, phosphate free, biodegradable liquid dish soap, preferably light-colored. Then rinse thoroughly and dry with a cotton cloth.

  • Never use powdered cleansers to clean your stone as they contain pumice which is an abrasive.
  • Never use acidic cleaners that may include ammonia.
  • You can buy special mild granite cleaners specifically designed for cleaning stone.
  • Will heat damage a granite countertop?
Heat will not hurt granite. Even 900˚F pans won’t dull the gloss. It is scratch-resistant and will retain its polish.

Is there anything I need to avoid getting on my granite countertops?
Anything acidic can etch the glossy surface and oils can soak into an unsealed top, so quickly clean up spills like wine, oil, mustard, citrus or chemicals.
